Shannon Sharpe Says He Wouldn't Have Chosen an HBCU If He “Had the Grades”

After acknowledging that he would not have attended an HBCU if he did not have to, Shannon Sharpe has come under heavy fire.

The admission coincided with Deion Sanders' revelation that, two years after publicly supporting HBCUs, he would be leaving Jackson State for the University of Colorado.

On Sunday, a Twitter user inquired, "So black institutions and things are a downgrade?" The Savannah State University alum and sports pundit responded.

Shannon responded to the Tweet writing: "I went to an HBCU, but only because I was prop 48. It worked out gr8 for me. Had I had the grades coming out of hs. I wouldn’t haven’t chosen an HBCU.”

The NCAA passed Prop 48 in 1986, which stipulates that high school athletes must get a certain minimum score on standardized college entrance exams in order to compete as freshmen.

The former athlete's claim that he only attended his HBCU because of his subpar grades shocked many fans and users, but others supported him. Sharpe then doubled down on his claim while discussing Deion Sanders on 'Undisputed."
