A popular vegetable sold in stores around the country has been recalled in several states because of a potentially serious health risk.
Duda Farm Fresh Foods, Inc. has issued a "precautionary advisory" of a select lot of washed and ready-to-eat Marketside Celery Sticks due to a possible listeria contamination discovered during a random sampling, according to a recall notice shared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.
The recall only affects the 4/1.6-ounce bag of Marketside Celery Sticks with a UPC 6 81131 16151 0, lot code P047650 and best if used by date of 03/23/2025. The affected product was distributed to select stores in more than two dozen states and Washington, D.C., including in Tennessee, and while it is no longer in stores, some consumers may have frozen them to use at a later date.
Listeria monocytogenes is the bacteria that can cause listeria, leading to "serious and sometimes fatal infections" that can cause severe illness in high-risk groups like children, the elderly, those who are pregnant and persons with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. Symptoms can include fever, chills, headaches, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea.
As of April 11, there have been no reported illnesses in connection to the recall. Anyone who has purchased the product should not consume it and should throw it out. For more information about the recall or to see product images, visit fda.gov.
