U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and other federal law enforcement officers focused on immigration enforcement have reportedly been targeted in at least two ambushes that took place in Texas during the past few days, FOX News reported on Monday (July 7).
The United States Justice Department named 10 individuals charged in relation in an incident in which suspects opened fire on correctional officers outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado on the Fourth of July, which resulted in one officer being shot in the neck. The defendants -- identified as Cameron Arnold, also known as Autumn Hill; Savannah Batten; Nathan Baumann; Zachary Evetts; Joy Gibson; Bradford Morris, also known as Meagan Morris; Maricela Rueda; Seth Sikes; Elizabeth Soto; and Ines Soto -- were reported to have initially shot fireworks at the facility, which is used by the Department of Homeland Security to hold individuals who have violated immigration policies or are awaiting deportation.
The suspects were each charged with three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer and three counts of discharging a firearm in relation to and in furtherance of a violent crime in relation to the incident. One or two individuals then broke off from the man group and sprayed graffiti on vehicles in the parking lot, which included the messages "ICE pig" and "F**k you pigs."
An officer responded to the scene and was shot in the neck by a defendant positioned nearby in the woods, according to the complaint. Another suspect then allegedly fired 20 to 30 rounds at unarmed correctional officers who had stepped outside of the building.
"The shooting was captured by both CCTV and the APD officer's body-worn camera," the complaint states via FOX News. The group fled the scene, leaving AR-style rifles behind, before eventually being detained.
The complaint was announced on the same day that a man was reportedly killed after opening fire at a U.S. Border Patrol facility in Texas, authorities confirmed via the Associated Press. Ryan Louis Mosqueda, 27, was fatally shot after federal agents returned fire in McAllen, according to McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez.
Mosqueda reportedly had an assault rifle and was carrying a utility vest at the time of the incident. The Border Patrol facility where the incident took place is located across the street from McAllen International Airport.
Another rifle and more ammunition was found by law enforcement after Mosqueda's death. The suspect's motive has not yet been determined by authorities, according to Rodriguez. One officer was reportedly injured during the incident, however, it's undetermined whether it was caused by a shrapnel or a bullet.
