The arrest of journalist Georgia Fort has intensified outrage over what many are calling a dangerous escalation against the press — particularly Black journalists — following the federal arrest of Don Lemon just hours earlier.

Fort, an independent journalist and vice president of the Minnesota chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, was taken into custody by federal agents on Friday morning (January 30) after reporting on protests in Minneapolis. Her arrest came less than a day after federal authorities arrested Lemon in Los Angeles for his coverage of the same protests.

Fort livestreamed the moment agents arrived at her door. “There’s agents at my door,” she said on Facebook Live as the situation unfolded. “As a member of the press, I filmed the church protest a few weeks ago and now I’m being arrested for that." Fort added, “It’s hard to understand how we have a Constitution, Constitutional rights, when we can just be arrested for being a member of the press.”

Both Fort’s and Lemon’s arrests appear to be tied to their reporting on a protest earlier this month at a church in St. Paul, Minnesota, that disrupted a religious service.

Video of Fort's arrest quickly spread across social media, sparking alarm among journalists, civil rights advocates, and lawmakers who say the arrests signal a direct threat to the First Amendment.

The back-to-back arrests have fueled fears that federal authorities are using law enforcement powers to intimidate or silence journalists documenting public dissent — particularly as protests continue over the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota.

Lemon’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, previously said the arrest of his client amounted to an attack on constitutionally protected journalism, arguing that the government appeared more focused on arresting reporters than investigating the actions of federal agents involved in the shootings. Fort’s arrest has only deepened those concerns.

As of Friday morning, authorities have not publicly detailed the charges against Fort.

Civil liberties groups and press organizations are calling for transparency, warning that the arrests risk setting a chilling precedent for journalists nationwide.
